Academic Honesty Statement

“Academic integrity is a principle in education and a choice to act in a responsible way so others can trust us. It means conducting all aspects of your academic life in a responsible and ethical manner. The IB expects students to produce genuine and authentic pieces of work, that represent their own abilities. That is, the IB wants to support "content creators", not "content imitators". Students should give credit where credit is due—so be honest and transparent and recognize how previous work is influencing/supporting your own work.”-International Baccalaureate Organization

Please be aware of the expectations linked here from the IBO, John T. Hoggard High School's Academic Integrity Policy, and the NHCS's Code of Conduct.

IB’s Statement on the Use of AI:

The IB believes that artificial intelligence (AI) technology will become part of our everyday lives—like spell checkers, translation software and calculators. We, therefore, need to adapt and transform our educational programmes and assessment practices so that students can use these new AI tools ethically and effectively. The IB is not going to ban the use of such software but will work with schools to help them support their students on how to use these tools ethically in line with our principles of academic integrity.

Students should be aware that the IB does not regard any work produced—even only in part—by such tools, to be their own. Therefore, as with any quote or material from another source, it must be clear that AI-generated text, image or graph included in a piece of work, has been copied from such software. The software must be credited in the body of the text and appropriately referenced in the bibliography. As with current practice, an essay which is predominantly quotes will not get many, if any, marks with an IB mark scheme.

From the IB Organization in January 2023:

What does the IB expect when a teacher ticks the authentication box to confirm that it is the students’ own work?

  • That they have seen the student develop the work over a period of time. IB coursework is not designed to be completed in a single evening. This is probably the best approach to ensure that the work belongs to the student, and it also will encourage best practice in writing the coursework.
  • That the student can explain their work sufficiently to give confidence that it has been created by them.
  • That the student is clear when they are quoting other people’s ideas and when they are claiming an idea or conclusion as their own work - this is the expected way of referencing.
  • That when comparing the quality of the final piece of work, it is in line with what they would expect the student to be able to produce.
  • That teachers are best placed to be able to know what the student is capable of and when a piece of work appears not to have been written by the student.

Ways Hoggard IB Teachers Support Student Integrity:

  1. All typed work is submitted through turnitin.com (Turnitin is now linked to Canvas)- If you have issues with this, see Mrs. Lillge
  2. All work that is typed must be typed on a google doc under the student’s school account.
  3. Teachers must have editing access to submitted google docs
  4. Teachers check in with their students to determine ability and knowledge, and that ability and knowledge should match the quality of submitted work.
  5. Long-term assignments are scaffolded so teachers can monitor student progress.
  6. Use the above bullet points from IB to determine if a student’s paper/work should be investigated.
